Western Councils to work with FPCS
26 July, 2010 ![]() FPCS Commissioner Ioane Naivalurua holding informal talks with Special Administrator Mr Aisea Tuidraki and staff of the Nadi Town Council. The Nadi, Lautoka and Sigatoka Town Councils have pledged their support towards the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service’s Yellow Ribbon Programme. This was after a courtesy visit by the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua to the Special Administrator of Sigatoka, Nadi and Lautoka Mr Aisea Tuidraki and his staff at the Nadi Town Council Complex on Friday, July 23. During the brief informal talks, the Commissioner discussed the crime free programme of the three municipalities and suggested ways that they could work together to ensure that crime in indeed reduced in the West. The Commissioner updated Mr Tuidraki and his staff of the various rehabilitation programmes within the corrections service. FPCS Public Relations Officer Fred Elbourne said that the talks focused on ways that the organisations could work together. “Talks basically focused on strategies that could be employed that will reduce crime and in the same vain also reduce the recidivism rate in the Western Division. “The Commissioner also explained to Mr Tuidraki and his staff the role the public plays in ensuring that ex-offenders do not reoffend.” Mr Tuidraki said that the councils were only too willing to work with FPCS and asked that the names of all inmates that will be released this year from the three municipalities be given to them, so that they could monitor their process outside. “We would like to have the names of all the inmates that will be released this year that come from our municipalities, so that we can support them upon their release. “Also we will be organizing a tour of the prisons so that we can show those inside that we support them and will work with the FPCS in their rehabilitation programme.” Mr Tuidraki told the Commissioner that the councils will be willing to have ex-offenders selected to do extra mural. Nadi Town Council Director of Finance Mr Pradeep K Lal said that they were very fortunate that the Commissioner took the time to come and talk to them. “We are thankful for the Commissioner for visiting us. “If he didn’t visit us and explain what was being done in prison, we would not have known.” After the discussion the Commissioner said that a team will be sent out to the three municipalities to conduct awareness on the FPCS rehabilitation programmes. www.corrections.org.fj
