The Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service will audit the performance of its wardens to ensure that Standard Operating Procedures are followed.

This will see an inspection through a staff review and evaluation to find out if policy and procedures, rules and regulations are followed.

Speaking to the FijiSUN, Commissioner of Prisons Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said the audit was a sign of their commitment towards building a better Fiji.

He said they are renewing and reviewing elements of their Standard Operating Procedures.

This is to be aligned to the new legislation in all prisons.

He said wardens need to understand the Standard Operating Procedures and study it carefully.

“They have to apply it to their work and comply with applicable accreditation standards.

“The procedures are simple and would allow wardens to understand how their work should be done.”

Brigadier-General Naivalurua said the Standard Operating Procedures reflects in the work of wardens and the audit will identify wardens who are and who are not working or contributing at all.

“We will audit their work, because sometimes officers get sacked for no reasons,” he said.

“We want to do things right and in the spirit and through we believe that we will excel.”

He said he had directed all officers in charge in all prisons that all reforms needed to be achieved by January 2011.

He said under the Government review, all reforms needed to be implemented before the general elections in 2014.

“The Prisons Department has a different vision and that is to implement all our reforms by 2012.

“We cannot wait until 2014. We want to do it now,”

Brigadier-General Naivalurua said.
