WOMEN INMATES ENJOY FAMILY DAY
![]() Inmate Milika Videi shares a light moment with her baby and husband Hakim Shah. Inmate Milika Videi of the Suva Womens’ Corrections Centre received a surprise visit from her husband during the centre’s Family Day last Saturday. Ms Videi who is serving a two-year sentence, could not hold back her tears when she met her husband. She was one of three women who gave birth recently at the Centre. “I was so happy to see my husband coming along to spend this Family Day together with our 11-month old baby,” she said. Ms Videi commended the management for organizing such a day to spend a time with their respective families. Dad Hakim Shah said it was a great opportunity to visit his daughter. “Normally, I come and visit them but today’s programme is different, we were given five hours to socialise with my wife and my beloved daughter,” he said. Officer in Charge at the Women’s Corrections Center Chief Corrections Officer Ela Nakacika said family day is also part of the Yellow Ribbon Project and community reintegration. CCO Nakacika said because of the support from inmate’s families, the management extended the days’ programme to 3pm. “In the past, the programme would run from 9am to 1pm but today we have extended it to 3pm because we want the inmates to spend more time with their families,” she said. Ms Nakacika said such opportunities could also build up a strong bond between mothers and their children. www.corrections.org.fj |
