SENIOR CORRECTIONS STAFF BRIEFED ON SUGAR INDUSTRY
Corrections Commissioner Lt. Col Ifereimi Vasu and members of the Command Group being briefed on the progress of the sugar industry at the FSC building yesterday. Government is fully committed to revitalizing the sugar industry to a sustainable level, staff officers of the Fiji Corrections Service were told. These were the comments made by the Director Sugar Viliame Gucake yesterday while addressing the FCS command group at the Fiji Sugar Corporation headquarters in Lautoka. Gucake told the officers the industry was on an upward trend and with farm and mill efficiencies, desired results will certainly be brought about. He said that while sugar production has improved compared to the same period last year, they hope to perform better especially in regards to TCTS (Tonnes Cane to Tonnes Sugar) and the quality of cane being delivered. Gucake added they were on track to return the sugar industry to long term viability by 2012. He said Government is also moving towards acquiring 100 per cent ownership and full control of the FSC. Currently Government is a major shareholder, owning 68 per cent of shares while statutory bodies, local companies and individuals own the remaining shares. The Corrections Command group meeting is normally held every quarter and yesterday marked the end of the final meet in Lautoka with visits to the FSC and Nadi Airport.
