LAUTOKA INMATES PLANT EVEN MORE

Lautoka inmates hard at work on their farm.

Inmates at the Natabua Corrections Centre this morning planted about 1,041 sweet potatoes and 146 pineapples.

This, as part of plans by the Fiji Corrections Service that all 12 institutions achieve at least 20 per cent on a contingency plan on food security.

Supervisor of Corrections Western Division Assistant Superintendent of Corrections Oliver Fisher said the three and half-acre land will be used especially for sweet potatoes and pineapples.

“We don’t need to buy agricultural produce to feed the inmates because the centre is self-sufficient” he said.

“This year was a great year for us since we worked towards commercial farming and our own food security,” he added.

Earlier this year, Commissioner of Corrections Lt Col Ifereimi Vasu was overwhelmed with the progress and the achievements of the farming development at the Natabua Corrections Center.
