KOREAN AMBASSADOR VISITS FCS

Korean Ambassador HE Cheong Hae-wook during a visit to the Suva Corrections Centre yesterday.

The Korean Ambassador His Excellency Cheong Hae-wook yesterday visited the Fiji Corrections Service headquarters and was given an overview of the work of the service.

A presentation was made to Ambassador Cheong by the Deputy Commissioner Akuila Namakadre on behalf of the Commissioner of Corrections Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu.

During his brief, Mr Namakadre said a possible area of intervention by the Korean Government could be the provision of expertise in prison industries, among others.

The FCS, with its current prison industries - poultry farm, piggery, cattle crops and vegetables, bakery, tailoring and joinery is trying to maximize its output to reach commercial level.

Ambassador Cheong also took a tour of the Suva Corrections Centre where he marveled at inmates’ artwork at the Tagimoucia gallery.

The courtesy call by Ambassador Cheong was initiated by the FCS in an effort to broaden its network with various diplomatic missions.

Recently the Commissioner of Corrections Lt. Col Vasu hosted the Japanese ambassador, Mr Yukuta Yoshizawa at the Corrections National Headquarters.

Lt. Col Vasu has also paid calls to the South African High Commissioner, Mr Abbey Matoto Pindelo, the South Korean Ambbassador, Mr Hae-ook Choeng, the Chinese Ambassador, Mr Huang Yong and the Indonesian Ambassador, Mr Aidil Chandra Salim.

The Commissioner is also expected to call on other heads of delegations including the Indian High Commissioner, Mr Vinod Chandra and the head of the European delegation.
