Inmates from the Suva Correction Centre help clean up the community in Kinoya on

Saturday.

Ten inmates from the Suva Corrections Centre were part of a major clean-up campaign in the Kinoya area on Saturday, the first such initiative held in the district of Nasinu.

“This is part of our efforts to engage with the community and is also in line with the Yellow Ribbon project in giving offenders a second chance,” FCS spokeswoman Ana Tamani said.

“While we are contributing to the keeping the environment clean, we also want to give inmates a sense of purpose and belonging,” Mrs Tamani said.

“We also want the communities out there to get used to seeing offenders take part in these kind of initiatives because it helps to restore relationships with them and ensures their successful reintegration back into society,” she added.

Seventeen Correction officers also took part in the clean-up campaign which was conducted in partnership with the Nasinu District Crime Prevention committee, Nasinu Town Council, the Fiji Police Force and members of the community in Kinoya.

Nasinu District Crime Prevention Committee chairman Ashwin Prasad said the event was part of the committee’s plan in keeping the environment clean.

The Nasinu Town Council provided support by supplying gloves, garbage bags and brush cutters.
