HUMAN TRAFFICKING WORKSHOP UNDERWAY

Corrections officer Jiujiuwa Cama (R) at the Human Trafficking workshop yesterday.

An awareness workshop on human trafficking is underway at the Fiji Police Academy with participants from the Military, Corrections Service, Navy, Fiji Intelligence Unit , Immigration Department and the Fiji Islands Customs Authority of Fiji.

In opening the three-day workshop yesterday, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) Chief Operations officer Henry Brown said human trafficking has been an ongoing problem and Fiji was no exception.

He said it needed the concerted effort of all concerned authorities and stakeholders.

“Our law enforcement agencies are still trying to combat it and we are learning a lot of lessons along the way.

“We must abolish the root causes of human trafficking,” ACP Brown said.

Workshop coordinator Detective Corporal Nischal Dass said the workshop was organized so that participants could be aware of the relevant laws and legislations in place to combat the problem.

“We want all operational staff of the concerned authorities to be fully trained on human trafficking legislation and also be able to identify victims and operations,” Mr Dass said.

The workshop ends tomorrow.
