FEMALE CORRECTIONS OFFICERS ON OVERSEAS EXPOSURE
Principal Corrections Officer, Vika Vereivalu (second from right) and Rehabilitation Officer Northern, Julia Tamani pose with Acting Commissioner SP Akuila Namakadre and Director Rehabilitation SP Salote Panapasa. Two female officers of the Fiji Corrections Service leave tomorrow (Saturday, Sept 17) for the Solomon Islands as more officers from within the department are getting overseas exposure. Principal Corrections Officer Vika Vereivalu, Staff Officer Rehabilitation and Rehabilitation Officer Northern Julia Tamani will attend the inaugural meeting of the Pacific Islands Women in Corrections Conference(PIWCC) in Honiara on September 19-23. The women are the second team of officers from the FCS currently attending conferences abroad. The week-long conference funded by Ausaid, and to be attended by over thirty female officers representing 15 countries, will become a regular forum to discuss and share issues and challenges facing women in corrections in the 21st century. Acting Commissioner of Corrections Akuila Bulivono, at a farewell function, encouraged the officers to showcase the reforms and rehabilitation programmes for offenders in Fiji especially the initiatives under the Yellow Ribbon Project. “You have been selected from among your peers and we are confident you will be good ambassadors not only for the Fiji Corrections Service but for the Government of Fiji.” Also attending a conference in Singapore this week are the Commissioner of Corrections, Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu and the Director of Corporate Services, Peniasi Kunatuba. The two senior officers are attending the 13th annual conference of the International Prisons and Corrections Association from September 11-16. While in Singapore they will also look into the possibility of adapting the commercialisation and out-care model of the Singapore Prisons Service in Fiji. The Fiji Corrections Service plans to set up the Fiji Corporation for Rehabilitative Enterprise(FCORE) to be its business arm and the Community Action for the Rehabilitation of Ex-offenders(CARE) to spearhead its out-care initiatives next year. www.corrections.org.fj |
