CORRECTIONS TOP MILITARY RECRUITS

Not only were they the first group of corrections officers to pass out from the Fiji Military Forces regular intake.

The 17 cadet officers took out three of the four awards on offer during their three months basic training.

And to cap it off, Officer Cadet Joseph Work was judged the best recruit in winning the Best All Round Trophy at the passing out parade last Friday, October 14.

“It is another milestone for the Fiji Corrections Services,” says Supervisor Headquarters, Superintendant of Corrections Kelepi Tukana.

“To be awarded the best all round trophy means that he is the best, the top recruit of the lot and that is something that we are very proud of.”

The other two prize winners were Losana Nakabea who was judged the best female recruit and Usaia Vukuqaqa who won the best machine gun trophy.

The latest achievements are among a string of milestones recorded by the Fiji Corrections Service in the recent past. In a new initiative, the FCS has introduced the cadet officer scheme, similar to that of the RFMF, to build up a cadre of trained leaders in the Service.

Mr Tukuna says the cadet officers will undergo a programme of rotated attachments within the organisation in the next three months before taking up postings.

“We are now trying to build up a cadre of leaders to ensure that we have a proper succession plan at the very top echelon of the organisation,” he says.

“We have had Commissioners brought in from outside because of people at the senior level. We want to ensure that in future we will have people who are properly prepared and trained for the top job.”
