programme at Naboro.

Senior officers of the Fiji Corrections Service including Commissioner, Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu went back to the classroom to do literacy and numeracy classes as part of efforts to empower them with useful skills to assist them in changing the lives of offenders under their care.

The officers which also included divisional supervisors, officers in charge and staff officers spent two days doing basic report writing, presentations skills, basic numeracy skills as well as computing skills at the Molikula programme .

“The Molikula programme being operated from the Maximum Security Corrections centre is aimed at teaching inmates literacy and numeracy skills as part of the rehabilitation package offered by the Corrections Service,” says programme coordinator, Principal Corrections Officer Josuva Dausiga.

“In having officers undertake the classes not only enhances and improves their skills, they all also have a better appreciation of the programme and its benefits.”

PCO Dausiga said the classes also gave the 16 senior officers to assess the value of the programme and how it could also be useful to officers.

The Molikula program on literacy and numeracy in which inmates are taught basic mathematics and English language was introduced three years ago.

The decision to introduce the programme to officers was made by the Commissioner of Corrections, Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu after and assessment of its content.

“Last two weeks, we had a three-day workshop on the program in which 16 senior officers including the Commissioner assessed the program as to how it can help the officers,” A/POC Josua says.

“The program will help and assist a lot to officers in terms of their presentation and report writing," he added.
