CORRECTIONS BOSSES OFF TO ATTEND ASIA MEET

Corrections Commissioner Lt Col Ifereimi Vasu (L) and his deputy Akuila Namakadre are attending the APCCA in Tokyo.

Commissioner of Corrections Lt Col Ifereimi Vasu and his deputy Akuila Namakadre flew out of the country today to attend the 31st Asian Pacific Conference of Correctional Administrators (APCCA) in Tokyo, Japan.

One of the main agenda items participants will discuss are the Challenges and Initiatives in Corrections in the Asia Pacific region.

The duo will present the challenges facing the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS), an overhaul of the FCS legislations and the implementation of changes and initiatives.

Other issues they will focus on include bringing about awareness to stakeholders on the current legislations and its provisions and reviewing legislations where necessary.

Deputy Commissioner Namakadre said they hoped to learn a lot from the conference as there will be a lot of information sharing and also comparing their respective experiences.

“We hope that we will be able to bring back with us new ideas and initiatives to apply to the FCS,” Namakadre said.

This is the Commissioner’s first attendance at the APCCA since he took up office this year.

The conference runs from 9th to 14th October with this year’s theme being ‘Towards Accountable and Successful Corrections’.

The inaugural meeting of the APCCA was held in Hong Kong in 1980.
