BE PROUD OF YOUR CULTURE, INMATES URGED

workshop graduation last Friday.

Fifteen inmates of the Suva Corrections Centre were encouraged to be proud of their culture and identity.

The inmates who completed a 6-week training on culture were emotionally moved when the Chairman of the Native Land and Fisheries Commission Ratu Viliame Tagivetaua told them how important their identity is.

“If we really know our true identity we will be able to better understand our culture, tradition and language,” Ratu Viliame said.

He said it is important that people know their culture well even though they have been part of the rural-urban drift.

“What we are currently doing now is to strongly spread the message of how important our identity is,” he said.

He said the lesson should be taught first in families so that parents can pass the message to their children.

Ratu Viliame said upon understanding a persons’ identity, one will realise and acknowledge his responsibilities to the Vanua and the Province.

Inmate Peni Waqanibau said he was not fully aware of his culture but the workshop enabled him to understand the importance of his tradition and cultural values.

“I am fortunate to be part of this program,” he said.
