Inmates are taught basic business skills at the Nasinu Correction Centre.

Inmates nearing completion of their sentences at the Nasinu Corrections Centre are undergoing a workshop on basic business skills.

Sixteen inmates are currently attending the course which is being conducted by the National Centre for Small and Micro Enterprise Development (NCSMED).

While officially opening the course, Officer-in-Charge Acting Assistant Superintendent of Corrections Seremaia Bakeiyasawa encouraged the participants to make use of the opportunity.

“You will learn the skills of running a business, how to start it, how to sustain it and how to draw up your cash flow,” A/ASC Bakeiyasawa said.

FCS spokeswoman Ana Tamani said inmates selected for this course have successfully completed the first phase of rehabilitation and are now on to the second phase which deals with enhancing personalities or character.

“Although they have not completed phase two, they have been selected to undergo this course because they have almost completed their terms.

“The aim is to ensure that upon release, inmates can venture into micro-businesses and sustain themselves,” Mrs Tamani said.

Under the Small and Micro-Enterprise Act 2002, NCSMED is mandated to support and promote the establishment of small and micro enterprises particularly for the disadvantaged groups.
