Vaturekuka inmates uprooting grass in Siberia yesterday.

Twelve inmates from the Vaturekuka Correction Centre yesterday helped uproot about 3000 long-rooted Vertiver grass from Siberia to be planted at the new site for Navunidogoloa village in Cakaudrove.

Supervisor North ASP Penisoni Moce said the inmates were engaged the whole day and the activity helped boost the centre’s community reintegration programme.

“We were approached by the Commissioner Northern’s office,” ASP Moce said.

Correction officers were also involved in the day-long programme.

Navunidogoloa is the first village to be relocated inland as a result of rising sea levels in the area.

According to principal agricultural officer John Cox, the decision to involve inmates in the process was because most of them come from villages which are being threatened by climate change.
