Corrections Chief demands self-less service
12 April, 2012 Corrections boss Lt. Col Ifereimi Vasu has demanded sacrifice from his officers. Corrections Commissioner Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu today urged his senior officers to sacrifice themselves and think about the good of the nation. While opening the first quarter Command Group meeting this morning, Lt. Col Vasu urged the officers to “……think about the Fiji Corrections Service, think about the Fiji Government and think about the nation”. “We carry a huge responsibility and we need to ensure that the mandate given to us by Government is achieved. The Fiji Corrections Service has been mandated to reduce recidivism by 25 per cent and reduce escapes by 50 per cent come 2014. “I expect everyone to work 24/7 and I stress the importance of maintaining the safety and security of inmates,” Lt. Col Vasu said. He also stressed the importance of rehabilitating inmates and ensuring that not only are they treated well at correction centres but that they do not return. “We must re-look at our rehab programmes, we have to work smart,” he said. Lt. Col Vasu has also urged his senior officers to think outside the box and “get out of the habit of working within their confinements”. “If we continue to do that, the going will get tough for us. We need to think outside the box in the course of our work,” he said. He also stressed the importance of meeting the targets set out in the departments’ annual corporate plan for the year. “One of the challenges we faced is the recent flooding in the Western division which affected two of our Correction centres in regards to food security,” he said. Lt. Col Vasu has also encouraged the senior officers to work within their allocated budgets. www.corrections.org.fj
