Members of the Fiji Corrections Service have been reminded to carry out their roles as rehabilitation officers in order to ensure that inmates change for the better and do not return to prison.

Speaking during the first quarter parade at the Naboro drill square on Friday, Corrections Commissioner Lieutenant Colonel Ifereimi Vasu said rehabilitation is now the main focus of their work.

“It is important for all of you to understand the work that you do in order for us to achieve what has been mandated to us by the Government of the day,” he said.

The Fiji Corrections Service has been mandated to reduce recidivism by 25 per cent and escapes by 50 per cent, come 2014.

He reiterated that he wanted to see the number of escapes drop.

“It is our duty to see that inmates do not escape from our custody but that they serve their terms that have been dished out by the court,” Lt. Col Vasu said.

“Be responsible, work hard and let us all work together for the good of the Service and for the good of the nation.

“Also remember that your families are very important,” he advised the officers.

Live-in officers have also been instructed to reduce wastage of electricity in their homes.

Officers from the Nasinu, Suva, Women, Maximum, Medium, Pre-release and Minimum Correction Centre attended the parade.
