Female Corrections officer soars to new heights
07 October, 2011 Staff officer Inspector General Assistant Superintendent Ana Wilikibau. She is the first female to hold the post of Staff Officer Inspector General and Staff Officer Professional Standards within the Fiji Corrections Service. And while that is a huge achievement in a male-dominated organisation, the journey has not been easy one for Ana Wilikibau. The Nukuloa, Gau native is also the second woman to hold the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Corrections. From very humble beginnings in 1980 as a Corrections officer class C, Wilikibau rose through the ranks and persevered. Before her new appointment she was Divisional Rehabilitation officer and was responsible for ensuring that inmates successfully completed the programmes under the rehabilitation framework. She was responsible for inmates from the Suva Corrections Centre, Womens, Nasinu and Levuka. Her new role now includes conducting institutional visits, investigating internal matters and advising the Commissioner on policy matters. “I know the role will be a challenging one because of the massive task that is expected of me to do. But I am ready to take it on and will carry out my duties to the best of my ability,” said the mother of four. Wilikibau will be based at the National Headquarters in Suva.
