Community Policing Symposium off to a good start
13 October, 2011 ![]() Participants at day one of the inaugural Community Policing Symposium at Nasova. The inaugural Community Policing symposium got underway at the Fiji Police Academy in Nasova where the Police Force and other stakeholders discussed strategies on how the Police and the community can work together to fight crime. In opening the workshop, Minister for Social Welfare, Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni said the collective effort of stakeholders would ensure cohesiveness and community bonding in the fight against crime. “Today’s symposium is an attempt to solicit ideas and gather as much information as possible based on your experiences to create an institution that will assist the police in conducting research on crime trends and developing crime prevention policies and programs,” Dr Luveni said. She told participants that their effort will contribute to realizing the heart of the key pillars of the People’s Charter for Peace, Change and Progress. The nine pillars, she said cannot be realized if we do not provide an environment conducive to development. Commissioner of Police Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said the Police Force needs close alliance with the community not just for a certain period but the relationship needs to be an enduring and balanced one. “It’s not about being professional versus civilian, it’s not about you or us, it’s about all of us,” Naivalurua said. Yellow Ribbon coordinator Chief Corrections officer Isireli Dausiga will present at the symposium tomorrow. www.corrections.org.fj
