17 officers learn firefighting skills

by FCS media at Naboro.

Seventeen officers of the Fiji Corrections Service are undergoing a firefighting course at the Naboro Corrections complex.

National Fire Authority’s senior training officer Waisea Vakalolo said this was a refresher course for officers who attended a similar course last year.

“The main aim is to assist NFA when there is a need from Navua NFA. Instead of calling Suva NFA, officers in Naboro can lend a helping hand in putting out a fire within the Suva – Navua corridor.

“We are hoping to conduct a similar course in Labasa but that will depend on the FCS,” Mr Vakalolo said.

In opening the workshop yesterday, deputy Commissioner Akuila Namakadre said Corrections is about saving lives.

“Currently in our custody are 1181 inmates. We are responsible for their safety and wellbeing.

“Firefighting and fire prevention is paramount to overall security of institutions,” Namakadre said.

He added that firefighting is part of FCS community engagement as it has a Volunteer Fire Brigade which exists for institutions, barracks and surrounding communities.
