Young Farmers Development Program
06 February, 2010 ![]() (Sitted from right) - FPCS Director of Corporate Services Mr. Kunatuba, The Commissioner of Fiji Prison & Corrections Service Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua, TTM Specialist Dr. Chang and Ministry of Agriculture representative with Young Farmers 16 youths (sons of officers) belonging to the first ever Young Farmers Development Program graduated from a two weeks fruits and vegetable training course from Nacocolevu on Friday, 05 February. The training programme was facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture in cooperation with the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM) was historical as it was the first time to send sons of officers on such a course. Presenting the certificates to the youths, the Commissioner of Fiji Prisons & Corrections Service (FPCS) Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua said that the program was aimed at keeping youths on track thus preventing them from coming into prison. “I stand on behalf of your parents to thank you for your achievement. Fiji needs young people like you and you can become millionaires if you keep on track. The Commissioner reminded the youths to make use of the opportunities and to put into practice all that have been learnt. Brigadier General Naivalurua on behalf of the Fiji Government thanked the Taiwan Technical Mission for their continuous support and good work. TTM Specialist Dr. Chang reminded the graduates that the “Treasure is Hidden in the ground”, work hard and become successful millionaires. Director of Corporate Services Mr. Peniasi Kunatuba said that the Young Farmers Development Program was initiated to promote development amongst youth to prevent them from coming into prisons. “The program also aims to reverse the normal thinking that farming is for rural based communities through the establishment of farming systems in the urban area. Mr. Kunatuba also said that the program aims to change the mindset that the farming discipline is not only for school dropouts but more so for educated youths. Another group of young famers are currently participating in the course and will graduate on the 19th of this month. www.corrections.org.fj
