The Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service has signed a contract with Modern Investments Limited to begin construction work on a Multi-Purpose vicinity that is to be built at the Women’s prisons complex Korovou, this morning.

The construction of the vicinity which will be a one stop shop for members of the Public and Organizations that wish to hold conferences is expected to begin next week.

Prisons Chief- Brigadier General Iowane Naivalurua said the initiative was to facilitate the empowering of Women inmates through the Yellow Ribbon concept of the rehabilitation of inmates.

“This is the first time ever that we have dedicated a place for the rehabilitation of female inmates. It’s important to recognize women and help develop their skills to enable them to support their families when they are released. It is going to be unique. There will be no fence line in between just the perimeter fence line so that the engagements are done within.’

Naivalurua added that changing mindsets of female inmates was important.

Meanwhile the complex is expected to open early next year.
