A special church service was conducted on Sunday August 1, 2010 at the Fiji Correctional Academy in Naboro to welcome 75 officers into the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service Basic Recruitment Course.

In attendance to support the recruits spiritually were the FPCS Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua, senior officers and their families.

The main celebrant at the welcoming service was FPCS Chaplain Assistant Superintendent Rev Aporosa Rageci.

In his sermon, Rev Rageci likened the training that the recruits will be undertaking over the next eight weeks as an athlete preparing for the Olympics marathon.

He told the recruits that like a marathon runner they must preserve and come out better at the end of the basic recruitment training.

In the official opening ceremony that was conducted on Monday August 2, 2010, the Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua told the recruits of the need to be the best in everything they do.

Commissioner Naivalurua told the recruits that everything that they do they must do it from the heart and not be superficial but be correctional professionals.

“Do not be correctional professionals in uniform value only, these type officers look neat and smart in their uniforms but are officers from only 0800hrs to 1630hrs.

“Do not be correctional professionals at skin value only; these types of officer will not go the extra mile.

“Everything you do, do it from the heart.”

Commissioner Naivalurua also warned the recruits about the three cardinal sins and they were;
1.    Being a corrupt officer
2.    Can’t look after their families
3.    Having extramarital affairs.

He told the recruits that any officer that committed any of the three cardinal sins would be discharged from the service.
