Nasinu Secondary School students and officials from the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service at Nacocolevu Research Station in Sigatoka. Seventeen students of Nasinu Secondary school today (Monday, August 23) are attending an intensive training programme in proper farming skills under the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service Youth Outreach Programme at the Nacocolevu Research Station in Sigatoka. FPCS Public Relation Officer who opened the two weeks course said the aim of the programme were twofold, prevention and upskilling. “While we work in rehabilitating inmates, we are also working to prevent youths from entering prison. “We believe that once a young person enters prison, they are exposed to the criminal mindset and the risk of them becoming criminal is very high. “Our youth outreach programme is about giving the youths the necessary skills so that they can equip themselves in life.” The training programme is being facilitated by the Ministry of Agriculture in cooperation with the Taiwan Technical Mission (TTM). During the training the Ministry of Agriculture will provide theory and the practical sessions. At the end of the training programme the students will have acquired the basic knowledge in producing vegetables and fruits, identify factors influencing vegetable growth, identify and select sites for farming and appreciate commercialise farming. The crops that the students will learn about during the programme are capsicum, cucumber, eggplant, English cabbage, French bean, tomato, water melon, pawpaw and citrus fruits. www.corrections.org.fj |
