A suggestion has been made that once the Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service’s (FPCS) commercial farming arm is fully operational that it becomes a learning institution in agriculture.

This observation was made by the Permanent Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office Mr Pio Tikoduadua during a visit to the FPCS on Thursday, March 4.

“I am really impressed.

“The Prison Service could be used as an institution to pursue studies in agriculture.

“People in the villages should be shown what is being done here, because in the villages it is only about subsistence farming.

Mr Tikoduadua who was briefed at the FPCS National Headquarters by Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Mr Auta Moceisuva before touring the Naboro Correctional Complex was also very impressed with the recent developments at the FPCS Commercial Piggery.

During the walking brief around the FPCS Commercial Entity, Mr Tikoduadua was given an outline of the direction the FPCS were taking as it moved towards full commercialisation in 2014.

FPCS Public Relations Officer Fred Elbourne said the visit by the Permanent Secretary was an opportunity to showcase the developments within the FPCS and give Mr Tikoduadua an opportunity to see first-hand how government funds are being utilised.

“It was an ideal opportunity to showcase the developments of our commercial arm and also to show Mr Tikoduadua how we utilised government’s funds not only for commercialisation but rehabilitation as well.”
