The Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service kicked start the October Yellow Ribbon Month yesterday at 1300hrs (Friday, October 01) with a Commemorative March from the Fiji School of Maritime in Suva Point to its National Headquarters in Suva.

The FPCS every year since the launching of the Yellow Ribbon Project on October 11 2008 dedicates October as Yellow Ribbon Month.

Before the Commemorative March, the staff and officers of FPCS National Headquarters attended a short dedication at its National Headquarters at midday.

The FPCS has a whole host of events and activities planned for the month of October, ending with a Daring FunRun on Saturday October 30 at the Naboro Corrections Complex.

The Daring FunRun will consist of ten teams of ten members from selected secondary schools, the Disciplined Services, Government Agencies and the Corporate Sector.

The Daring FunRun is being used as the impetus to create awareness for FPCS new rehabilitation programme CARE (Community Action for the Rehabilitation of Ex-offenders).

The objectives of CARE are;

1.       To improve the quality of rehabilitation services through knowledge sharing

2.       To build awareness and understanding of the rehabilitation processes among the general public

3.       To increase efficiency by reducing duplication of work and services between member agencies

4.       To create a flawless transfer of offenders from incare (prison) to aftercare (released).

Basically, CARE is the mobilization and facilitation of the community to take action towards rendering appropriate support services to help ex-offenders and their families re-integrate successfully into society.

On Saturday, October 2 the officers and staff of FPCS will be conducting its Civil Pride programme at various centres around Fiji.

For Suva, efforts will be concentrated at Pearce Home, Home of Compassion, Father Law Home, Samabula Old People’s Home and St Christopher’s Home.
