The Fiji Prisons and Corrections Service in its effort to improve the efficiency and cleanliness of its Women Institution kitchens and to impart knowledge to its inmates, today (Tuesday, April 27) conducted a Kitchen Organisation Workshop.
The workshop which was held at the Suva Women Prison & Corrections Center Kitchen was conducted by retired Home Economics Teacher Ms Harieta Faisi.
Eighteen inmates attended the course, where they learnt how to properly organise a kitchen, the functions of kitchen equipment and keeping a kitchen hygienic.
Mrs Faisi who works for the NGO Women in Development told the inmates that there was no excuse for a disorganised kitchen.
“Each of you has no excuse for having a disorganised kitchen.
Mrs Faisi told the inmates that kitchens are designed with a purpose, where everything has a place and function.
“A clever person designed this kitchen, where the sink goes, the stove, the cabinets and windows.
“So, do not do a disservice to the person that designed this kitchen.
“There are things that relate to the sink, where you store the washing up items.
The inmates were told why cabinets were specifically placed at certain spots in the kitchen.
“Certain cabinets were installed for certain things, the one under the sink is for your washing up items, the cabinets above the stove is for immediate cooking items, like oil and salt.
“Tea and breakfast things are stored with immediate cooking items.”
Ms Faisi told the inmates that they should all know how to keep a presentable, neat and hygienic kitchen.
“Remember, clean up after you use the kitchen, food attracts cockroaches and sweets attract ants and when they come, they will set up homes.
“If they eat your sugar, don’t complain because it is your fault.”
