Fourteen medical orderlies of the Fiji Prisons and Correctional Service is undergoing a two-week skills upgrading course at the Corrections Academy, Naboro Prisons Complex under the supervision of the Corrections’ Visiting Medical Officer, Dr Qoriniasi.

The objectives of the course is to teach the officers skills that enable them to attend to all types of casualties that could arise in prison situation before skilled medical care is obtained. Course coordinator POC Meli Cama said the 14 participants have been very excited as the course content has been wide ranging to cover all the ills and situation that should be anticipated among inmates.

Dr Qoriniasi says that he had tried to make the two-weeks exciting by dealing with situations that are realistic and which the orderlies could relate to in their work environments. Guest resource people would also be invited to share expertise in special areas of first aid assistance.

It is the first time that the VMO is running a medical orderlies course under the aegis of the Corrections Academy, says Commandant, ASP Jona Nawaqavou. Participants came form all the divisions of the Service.

The medical orderlies course is the third two-week courses that is being conducted by the Fiji Corrections Academy simultaneously, along with the cooking and the hapkido course. A total of 40 officers and 16 inmates are attending the courses.

ASP Nawaqavou said that a lot of adjustment had to be made to enable the three courses to be conducted. “This is an exciting weeks and we look forward to outcomes of the courses,”
