HE WHO YIELDS THE CANE
With the base and the top fashioned out of a 55 calibre bullet and measuring just 78 centimeters the cane carried by Corrections/Service Sergeant Major (CSSM) S Railoa ensures that the Commissioner of Prison’s orders are carried out to the latter.

As the person that yields the cane, Sergeant Major Railoa is responsible for all directives and instructions from the Commissioner of Prisons are accomplished accordingly to the highest level of professionalism.

Such is the responsibility of the CSSM that he reports directly to the Commissioner of Prisons or in the Commissioner’s absence to the Deputy Commissioner of Prisons.

The CSSM is one of three posts within the Prisons and Correctional Service that reports directly to the Commissioner the other two posts are Deputy Commissioner Prisons and Superintendent Headquarters.

The CSSM is the guarantor of discipline in the service.

As CSSM, Railoa has to have the morale and courage to identify and remedy defaulters on the spot and the physical courage to standard on physical situation.

CSSM Railoa said that his post requires him to be a role model of the Fiji Prisons and Correctional Services at all times.

“I must strive to be a good role model and preserve to maintain it at all times, both on and off duty.

“I must be observant, proactive and productive at all times,” CSSM Railoa said.
