COMBINE CHURCH SERVICE @ VATUREKUKA PRISON, 2008
The objective of the church service was to reintegrate the offenders back into the communities especially with the presence of their family members as well as:
1. Promote an environment of reconciliation for inmates and their families and communities at the end of their term that encourages forgiveness for past wrongs; lesser stigmatisations of inmates and develop a more accepting community. 2. Achieve a success rate of recidivism and to succeed at more meaningful occupations upon release which will ultimately reduce prison overcrowding. Organisational reforms have totally changed the Prison’s outlook which now focuses on shared responsibilities of inmates with emphasis on a more corrective role. The Labasa Prison management and staff had the privilege of hosting the special occasion with the presence of Tui Macuata – Ratu Aisea Katonivere, the Commissioner Northern, Tui Udu, Toko Tui of Cakaudrove, Bua and Macuata and church leaders of Labasa. Vinaka vakalevu to the Prison fellowship for its support as well as the Salvation Army for the certificate presentations and gifts. The efforts by the management and staff were a contributing factor to the success of the programme especially the dissemination of information (church service) as the concept of the yellow ribbon programme. The management owes its success to the commitment of its staff and their families, the support of individual families of inmates, ex-offenders and stakeholders in the North. The presence and deliberation over the occasion by the Commissioner of Prisons added to the auspiciousness of the occasion. |
