LORD MAYOR AND COUNCILORS VISIT PRISONS

The Suva city Lord Mayor Ratu Peni Volavola and his councilors visited the Prisons and Correctional Service through an invitation from the Commissioner of Prisons on 23rd May, 2008.

It started at the Prisons and Correctional Service Headquarters at Civic House in Suva with a presentation by the Deputy Commissioner of Prisons Auta Moceisuva before they were escorted to visit Suva Prison, Medium Prison and Maximum Security Prison.

During their visit they were shown with what the inmates are doing in prison through the rehabilitation program such as tailor shop and wood work at Medium Prison and the Bakery at Maximum Security Prison.

These are some of the income generating source to the Prison department if it is commercialized and the work is all done by inmates. The group were also shown with the current development and building built to accommodate inmates compared to the old one used during the past days and it is done by the limited budget given by the government.

After the visit they were accorded with a Fijian ceremony followed by a lunch. The Lord Mayor thanked the Commissioner of Prisons for the invitation and looking forward to help the Prison department in future.
