INMATE'S CIVIC DUTY

Inmates participated in the 100th anniversary of the Suva City Library as part of the Fiji Prisons and Correctional Service ‘Civic Pride’ initiative. The large crowd that gathered into the Library ground were entertained by lively meke wesi and fan dance by the inmates from Suva and Nasinu Prisons. The Commissioner of Prisons Brigadier Ioane Naivalurua was also in attendance at the launching ceremony.

The week-long celebration was launched by Mr William Thomas a grandson of the late Andrew Carnegie the multi-millionaire philanthropist who was behind the establishment of the library. The Suva City Library is among the 100s of libraries around the world that had benefitted from the endowment of Mr Carnegie. The participation of the inmates is part of the initiatives of the Department to be involved in community and civic activities as part of its rehabilitation effort. Previously, inmates have participated in the cleaning of the Suva sea shores and the CWM Hospital.

It is the intent of the Commissioner that inmates be involved in more civic activities as part of their exposure as well a way of reparation to the community.
