HERITAGE PLAN FOR PRISON
![]() AS part of its five-year plan, the old Suva Prison blocks could be turned into a national heritage. Prisons Commissioner Brigadier General Ioane Naivalurua told interim Cabinet ministers during a tour of the prison complex that it could be a money earner. The old prison blocks were built in 1912-1913 and that the Hangman room will be maintained and earmarked as heritage sites. This he said would be revenue generating for Fiji, if the proposal goes ahead. Mr Naivalurua also briefed the interim Cabinet on the need for a counsellor. He said right now the prisons department was relying on the service of pastors and churches. A counsellor is expected to be hired in the new year. Mr Naivalurua said they were trying to engage the public on the type of work they were doing. "Our aim is to have a church service to try and bring as many as families as possible to come and sit with their sons and daughters," he said. "We had a church service in Labasa yesterday, last week was in Lautoka and a service for Suva will be held this week or next week. About 400 people were there during the church service yesterday and we had lunch together. "We had a 75 per cent attendance yesterday so out of the 56 inmates about 39 families turned up. For me, that was a big success story," Mr Naivalurua said. Source: Fiji Times online. |
