However, history appears to be repeating itself when the Government established a rural prison in Lau as a means of avoiding sending offenders from the rural areas to urban institutions where they are presumably contaminated and become source of anti-social activities when returning to the village.

The latest urban prison was Nukulau Prison that was established in 21st of July 2000 after the May 2000 coup and this prison was purposely for the coup related offences. Nukulau Prison was closed on the 23rd of December 2006 by the Interim Government and prisoner’s were located to prisons on the main land prisons at Suva, Nasinu and Naboro.

The organization endeavors to provide the programs, education and treatment which will focus mainly on the correction of and for them to become a better citizen of this country. The prison staffs are being trained to develop their skills under the concept of the new Prisons and Correction Act 2006 and to dedicate their total change of attitudes through professional’s leadership of undertaking great PRIDE of (Professionalism, Respect, Integrity, Dignity, and Excellence) in the daily execution of their duties.
