Kumar Authorized Staff Establishment: 10 Authorized Prison Capacity: 26 Prison Type: Receiving Centre/Unclassified Prison Background Information Levuka Prison was established in 1964 mainly to cater for women prisoners who have been convicted for any criminal offence in Fiji. In 1976, the prison was converted to a male prison and all female prisoners were moved to Suva. It is situated on the island of Ovalau in the town of Levuka the old capital of Fiji in the province of Lomaiviti. In Levuka Prison was converted into a male prison and the women prisoner’s were transferred to its current site at Suva. Prisoner’s employment includes cemetery maintenance, root crops and vegetable farming and the upkeep of prison compound, Deed of Cession ground and other government stations. Rehabilitation programs are mainly focused on Agriculture, Tradition and Culture. |
