Fiji Prisons & Corrections Service

The successful reintegration of offenders into the community is the best security for society.
COMPLIANCE
The Fiji Prison and Correctional Service is responsible for the safe, secure and humane treatment of persons in custody by providing opportunities to correct offending behavior, develop work and life skills and perform community service. They also work towards enhancing the quality of custodial responsibilities, improve inmate rehabilitation programmes, develop human resources and modernize the service. In this regard, the FPCS is obligated to reduce prisoners escape by at least 10% per year from the present level of 33% per year and offenders who successfully complete rehabilitation programme increased from 10 to 50 per year by 2011.

Given the archaic structural design of the Prison facilities which were not conducive to prisoner’s rehabilitation, the FPCS embarked on a programme to upgrade its Prisons facilities in compliance to the Norms and Conventions of the United Nations on the treatment of offenders.

In 2002, cellblocks at Lautoka Prison were upgraded with inbuilt amenities and also the construction of the new Prison Administration Block. From 2005 to 2007, the cell blocks at the Medium Security Prison and Labasa Prison were also upgraded and a new Remand Block was built at Suva Prison. The provisions of these modern facilities have sub-sequently reduced complain that were normally associated with the old facilities.
