Poultry

Nesting Eggs For Growth

Naboro Prisons Farm Complex

The Naboro Prisons farm complex has always had a poultry farm producing eggs for sale to both prisons staff and outside customers.

However, the poultry is not in full operation, says Staff Officer(Farms) PPO Ifereimi Nakitorotoro says, presently only producing 15 trays of eggs a day.

“When in full operation our layers should be producing over 40 trays of eggs a day,” he says. At present the poultry now has 471 layer birds but it is hoped that this will increase to 1300.

“We are now raising chicks for replacement when the current layers have reached their limit of their productive lives,” PPO Nakitorotoro says.

The poultry is being attended to by inmates from the Minimum Security Prison. Inmates are training in all aspects of egg farming from raising layer chicks to feed to harvesting. This is a skill that if inmates are guided properly on release could find very useful in small village-based revenue generating activities.
